Ask for Personal Space in Portuguese: Polite, Clear Boundaries — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Say what you need right now
A direct sentence can be kind and clear. Preciso de um tempo (I need some time) or preciso ficar sozinho/sozinha (I need to be alone) explains your need without blaming the other person.
Use a form that fits the relationship and situation. A calm tone can help, but you do not need to over-explain a personal boundary.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso de um tempo para pensar. | I need some time to think. |
| Quero ficar sozinho por um pouco. | I want to be alone for a little while. |
| Prefiro conversar sobre isso amanhã. | I’d rather talk about this tomorrow. |
Ask for privacy or a pause
Use pode me dar um minuto? to ask for a moment, or prefiro não falar disso agora to say you would rather not discuss something now.
A boundary works best when it states the action you want: pause the conversation, stop a topic, or give you a little space.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode me dar um minuto, por favor? | Could you give me a minute, please? |
| Prefiro não falar desse assunto agora. | I’d rather not talk about this subject now. |
| Vamos fazer uma pausa e continuar depois. | Let’s take a break and continue later. |
Offer a next step only if you want one
If you know when you may want to continue, name a time. If you do not know yet, say that you will reach out when you are ready.

| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Amanhã eu te procuro para conversar. | I’ll reach out tomorrow so we can talk. |
| Ainda não sei quando vou estar pronto para falar. | I don’t know yet when I’ll be ready to talk. |
| Por favor, não compartilhe isso com outras pessoas. | Please don’t share this with other people. |
Remember: Prepare one clear phrase for time, one for privacy, and one for a pause. Choose a next step only if you want to offer one.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Prepare one clear phrase for time, one for privacy, and one for a pause. Choose a next step only if you want to offer one.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
