Ask to Swap a Work Shift in Portuguese: Clear, Polite Phrases — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Explain the date and shift you need to change
Turno is a work shift. Begin with the day and hours, then explain what change you are asking for. A specific request is easier to answer than a general “Can you switch with me?”
Trocar de turno can mean to swap shifts. If the schedule is not final, say that you are checking whether a swap is possible rather than presenting it as confirmed.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você consegue trocar de turno comigo na sexta? | Could you swap shifts with me on Friday? |
| Eu trabalho de manhã e preciso cobrir o turno da noite. | I work in the morning and need to cover the evening shift. |
| Queria trocar o turno do dia 18 pelo do dia 20. | I’d like to swap the shift on the 18th for the one on the 20th. |
Offer the exact shift you can take in return
If you are proposing an exchange, name the other shift you can cover. Em troca means “in exchange,” and no lugar de means “instead of.”
Ask whether the dates work for the other person and leave room for them to say no. Their schedule may not match yours.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso cobrir seu turno de sábado em troca. | I can cover your Saturday shift in exchange. |
| Esse horário funciona para você? | Does that time work for you? |
| Tudo bem se não der; só queria perguntar. | It’s okay if it doesn’t work; I just wanted to ask. |
Confirm approval and update the schedule
Before relying on the change, ask whether a manager needs to approve it and make sure the schedule is updated through the workplace’s normal process.
After the swap is confirmed, repeat each person’s shift and date. This helps prevent confusion when the original and replacement shifts are on different days.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso confirmar a troca com a gerente? | Do I need to confirm the swap with the manager? |
| Então você fica com a sexta à noite e eu cubro o sábado de manhã. | So you take Friday evening and I cover Saturday morning. |
| Pode atualizar a escala depois que a troca for aprovada? | Could you update the schedule after the swap is approved? |
Remember: Name both shifts, offer a specific exchange, and confirm the workplace approval process before treating the change as final.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name both shifts, offer a specific exchange, and confirm the workplace approval process before treating the change as final.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
