The I Speak Portuguese episode Why Brazil STOPS During the World Cup uses a bold title to open a conversation about football and the World Cup. In Brazil, futebol means soccer. Jogo is a flexible word for a game; partida is also common for a match. The expression torcer para takes the team you support: torço para o Brasil.

    Ask someone about a match

Use a simple question to join a conversation or ask a friend for a prediction:

    • Você vai assistir ao jogo? — Are you going to watch the game?
    • Para quem você está torcendo? — Who are you rooting for?
    • Qual é o seu palpite para o placar? — What’s your score prediction?
    • Você acha que vai ter prorrogação? — Do you think there will be extra time?

Listen for the key words first, then try to follow how the speaker connects them. You can understand the topic without catching every detail.

    Practice a short football conversation

This original example puts the vocabulary together. Try reading it aloud, then replace the team or prediction with your own.

A: Você vai assistir à partida hoje?

B: Vou. Eu torço para o Brasil. E você?

A: Também! Qual é o seu palpite para o placar?

B: Acho que vai ser dois a um.
