Aceitar vs. Concordar: Accept a Proposal or Agree with Someone — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use aceitar when you take an offer, plan, or condition
Aceitar means to accept or agree to take something offered. You can aceitar um convite (accept an invitation), aceitar uma proposta (accept a proposal), or aceitar as condições (accept the conditions). The focus is your decision to take the offer or terms.
For a casual plan, a short response can show acceptance. If you are accepting only one part, state the condition clearly.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Aceitei o convite para jantar. | I accepted the invitation to dinner. |
| Você aceita pagar metade? | Would you agree to pay half? |
| Ela aceitou a proposta de trabalho. | She accepted the job offer. |
Use concordar com an idea, opinion, or person
Concordar means to agree. The common pattern is concordar com alguém or concordar com uma ideia. Use it when you share another person’s opinion or assessment, not when you mean that you physically receive an invitation or item.
In conversation, you can agree partly or respectfully disagree by adding a phrase such as em parte (in part) or mas acho que… (but I think…).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Concordo com você sobre o horário. | I agree with you about the time. |
| Eu concordo com a primeira parte, mas tenho uma dúvida. | I agree with the first part, but I have a question. |
| Eles não concordam com essa decisão. | They don’t agree with that decision. |
Remember: Accept an offer with aceitar; agree with an idea or person with concordar com. For a proposal, the context determines whether you are accepting it or agreeing with its reasoning.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Accept an offer with aceitar; agree with an idea or person with concordar com. For a proposal, the context determines whether you are accepting it or agreeing with its reasoning.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
