CELPE-Bras Exam Format: Written and Oral Test Guide — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Know what the CELPE-Bras measures
CELPE-Bras is Brazil's official proficiency exam in Portuguese as a foreign language. It focuses on using Portuguese to carry out communicative actions, so context, purpose, and audience matter alongside grammar and vocabulary.
The exam has a written part and an oral part. Together, they assess comprehension and production in Portuguese. Check the current INEP guidance and the notice for your exam edition for official dates, registration rules, and any procedural updates.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso explicar uma ideia com clareza. | I need to explain an idea clearly. |
| Quem vai ler esta mensagem? | Who will read this message? |
Prepare for the integrated written part
The written part brings comprehension and writing together. You work with source material and produce texts in Portuguese, so successful preparation means understanding what you hear or read and then selecting the details that serve the task.
Practise identifying the requested outcome before you draft: are you informing, inviting, explaining, or responding? Keep notes about the central message, relevant evidence, and the intended reader.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O vídeo apresenta uma iniciativa para reduzir o desperdício. | The video presents an initiative to reduce waste. |
| Escreva uma mensagem para convidar seus colegas a participar. | Write a message inviting your classmates to take part. |
Build confidence for the oral interaction
The oral part is a face-to-face interaction with evaluators. The official overview describes an opening conversation about personal interests followed by discussion of everyday or general-interest topics using visual or written prompts. The exact guidance for your edition is the authority to follow.
Practise answering with a clear point, a reason, and a specific example. You do not need a memorized speech; you need to understand the question and respond in a way that keeps the conversation meaningful.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Gosto de morar perto do centro porque consigo fazer muita coisa a pé. | I like living near downtown because I can do many things on foot. |
| Na minha experiência, aprender em grupo ajuda, mas também estudo sozinho. | In my experience, learning in a group helps, but I also study on my own. |
Remember: Study for communication across listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Search for the latest CELPE-Bras guidance on the official INEP website before relying on dates or procedures.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Study for communication across listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Search for the latest CELPE-Bras guidance on the official INEP website before relying on dates or procedures.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
