CELPE-Bras Oral Test: Practice Personal and Everyday Topics — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Practise introducing your real experiences
The official exam guidance describes an opening conversation about the participant's interests and a later discussion of everyday and general-interest topics using prompts. Practise speaking about your real routines, goals, and experiences so you can answer follow-up questions naturally.
Prepare a few ideas, not a script. A memorized paragraph can become hard to adapt when the examiner asks a different question.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Comecei a estudar português porque trabalho com colegas brasileiros. | I started studying Portuguese because I work with Brazilian colleagues. |
| Nos fins de semana, gosto de conhecer bairros novos e experimentar comida local. | On weekends, I like exploring new neighborhoods and trying local food. |
Use a point, a reason, and an example
When a prompt asks for your opinion, make your position clear, explain why, and add one concrete example. This structure gives your answer direction without making it sound like a memorized essay.
You can also mention a limitation or another perspective. Balanced answers often give the conversation more to explore.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Acho que as bibliotecas ainda são importantes porque oferecem acesso gratuito a muitos recursos. Por exemplo, estudantes podem usar a internet e estudar em silêncio. | I think libraries are still important because they provide free access to many resources. For example, students can use the internet and study quietly. |
| Prefiro morar perto do transporte público, embora os bairros mais afastados também tenham vantagens. | I prefer living near public transportation, although neighborhoods farther away also have advantages. |
Keep the exchange moving when you need a moment
A brief pause is normal. If you need time, use a natural phrase, organize one idea, and continue. If a question is unclear, ask politely for clarification instead of answering a different question.
Listen to the full prompt and respond to its central point. A relevant answer with a clear explanation is more useful than a long response that wanders away from the topic.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Deixa eu pensar um instante. Acho que a principal mudança foi… | Let me think for a moment. I think the main change was… |
| Você poderia explicar o que quer dizer com essa parte? | Could you explain what you mean by this part? |
Remember: Use official sample prompts to practise spontaneous, relevant answers; check INEP's current guidance for the format and instructions for your edition.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use official sample prompts to practise spontaneous, relevant answers; check INEP's current guidance for the format and instructions for your edition.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
