CELPE-Bras Reading Practice: Find Purpose and Key Details — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Preview the text before reading every line
Start with the title, source, layout, and first sentence. These clues can tell you whether you are reading a notice, opinion piece, invitation, or practical guide and what kind of information to expect.
Then read the prompt and decide what information you need. A focused question helps you spend time on relevant details rather than translating the entire text.

Separate the main idea from examples
A text may include stories, numbers, or quotations that support its central message. Ask what claim or information those details illustrate, and note any limit or condition that changes the meaning.
Watch connectors such as embora, por exemplo, and portanto. They signal contrast, illustration, and conclusion.

| O programa atende três bairros, por exemplo, Centro e Boa Vista. | The program serves three neighborhoods, for example Centro and Boa Vista. |
Use evidence accurately in your own response
When a task asks you to use information from a text, make sure each detail supports your response. Paraphrase carefully: do not change a suggestion into a requirement or a possible result into a promise.
If you are unsure about one word, use the sentence around it and the overall topic to infer a reasonable meaning. Confirm the inference with the rest of the text.

| O texto recomenda que os visitantes cheguem cedo. | The text recommends that visitors arrive early. |
| A pesquisa sugere uma tendência, mas não explica todas as causas. | The study suggests a trend, but it does not explain all the causes. |
Remember: Read for purpose first, then collect accurate details that help you complete the task.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Read for purpose first, then collect accurate details that help you complete the task.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
Sources and your next lesson
This I Speak Portuguese practice guide builds on our CELPE-Bras Reading Practice: Find Purpose and Key Details lesson on Real Life Portuguese, with written recall tasks and additional speaking practice. The explanations and examples are teaching material; the practice questions are exercises, not a transcript of a recording.
To add Brazilian audio to your routine, choose a lesson in the Real Life Portuguese app. The app offers its own lessons and practice; this page does not imply that every example here has an app recording.
