How to Practise Speaking for CELPE-Bras: Explain and Support Ideas — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Answer the question directly before adding detail
Start with a clear response to the prompt, then explain your reason. This helps the listener follow your point even if you are searching for a word.
Avoid beginning with a long introduction that delays your answer. You can add nuance after the listener understands your main idea.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Sim, eu usaria bicicleta para trajetos curtos porque é prática. | Yes, I would use a bicycle for short trips because it is practical. |
| Na minha opinião, a biblioteca deve continuar aberta à noite. | In my opinion, the library should stay open at night. |
Support opinions with a specific example
A reason explains your logic; an example shows what that reason looks like in real life. You can draw from your own experience, a familiar situation, or a consequence you can explain clearly.
If the topic is unfamiliar, compare it with something you know rather than inventing facts. A simple, relevant example is enough.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Por exemplo, no meu bairro, muita gente vai ao mercado a pé. | For example, in my neighborhood, many people walk to the market. |
| Isso pode ajudar estudantes que trabalham durante o dia. | That can help students who work during the day. |
Make comparisons without losing your main point
Comparisons let you acknowledge another view while keeping your own position clear. Useful phrases include por outro lado (on the other hand), enquanto (while), and depende (it depends).
Finish by explaining which factor matters most to you. This gives the answer a natural ending and can invite a follow-up.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O transporte público é mais barato; por outro lado, o carro pode ser mais rápido em alguns horários. | Public transportation is cheaper; on the other hand, a car can be faster at some times. |
| Depende da distância, mas eu escolheria o ônibus para ir ao centro. | It depends on the distance, but I would choose the bus to go downtown. |
Remember: Practise expressing ideas you can explain. Flexible communication is more useful than memorizing a perfect speech.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practise expressing ideas you can explain. Flexible communication is more useful than memorizing a perfect speech.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
