Meet Bruno and the teaching teamFirst identify what is being switched off
In the source episode, work-life balance leads to a discussion of screens and stopping work. This article develops original language practice around that topic. It does not offer medical advice, recommend treatment or claim that a particular screen routine has a proven health effect.
With a direct object, desligar often describes switching something off: desligar o computador, desligar o telefone, desligar a televisão. With the reflexive construction and de, se desligar de can describe mentally detaching or no longer paying attention to something. Context decides whether a sentence is about a physical connection or a person’s attention.
In everyday Brazilian speech, you will hear Eu preciso me desligar um pouco do trabalho — I need to switch off from work for a bit. The me refers back to eu; the phrase is not an instruction to unplug the job. Keep the complete construction in mind rather than translating each word separately.
Eu desliguei o computador às seis.
I switched off the computer at six.
Depois do expediente, tento me desligar do trabalho.
After working hours, I try to switch off from work.
Vou deixar o celular de lado durante o jantar.
I am going to put my phone aside during dinner.
Say what you will do without ordering somebody else to do it
A first-person statement explains your own availability or plan. It does not automatically impose a rule on your friends or colleagues. Compare Vou guardar o celular durante o jantar — I am going to put my phone away during dinner — with Guarda o celular — Put your phone away. The second addresses another person directly and can sound more forceful.
If you need a shared agreement, ask a question: Podemos deixar os celulares de lado enquanto conversamos? — Can we put our phones aside while we talk? A person can agree, ask for an exception or prefer a different arrangement. The language task is to make that choice explicit.
Vou responder às mensagens amanhã de manhã.
I will answer the messages tomorrow morning.
Preciso conferir uma coisa rápida. Tudo bem para você?
I need to check something quickly. Is that okay with you?
Podemos conversar sem o celular na mesa?
Can we talk without the phone on the table?
Combine a limit with a concrete next step
A message is easier to act on when it says both when you are stopping and when you can return. Avoid vague promises if you do not know the time. Posso olhar amanhã — I can look tomorrow — is different from Vou entregar amanhã — I will deliver tomorrow. Do not accidentally turn availability into a delivery commitment.
Expediente refers to working or office hours in this setting. Fora do expediente means outside working hours. These expressions describe a period; using them does not by itself establish anyone’s legal rights, employment terms or permission to ignore a real obligation.
A: Você consegue revisar isso hoje à noite?
Can you review this tonight?
B: Hoje não consigo. Já encerrei o trabalho, mas posso olhar amanhã de manhã.
I cannot today. I have finished work, but I can look tomorrow morning.
A: Tudo bem. Você confirma amanhã o prazo de entrega?
That is okay. Can you confirm the delivery deadline tomorrow?
B: Confirmo, sim. Vou conferir a tarefa antes de combinar o prazo.
Yes, I will. I will check the task before agreeing on the deadline.
Understand desliguei as a moment of lost attention
A person may say Me desliguei por um instante — I switched off for a moment — after losing track of a conversation. In that setting they may be describing inattention, not an evening away from work. Ask about the missing part: Desculpa, perdi essa parte. Pode repetir? — Sorry, I missed that part. Can you repeat it?
If a call has ended because someone hung up, desligou may instead refer to ending the phone call. A useful clarification is Você encerrou a ligação ou a chamada caiu? — Did you end the call, or did the call drop? This is why the object, reflexive form and situation all matter.
Keep your own reply short enough to use
Prepare two sentences you could actually send: one about your current availability and one about the next step. For example, Agora vou descansar. Amanhã respondo com calma — Now I am going to rest. Tomorrow I will reply when I can give it proper attention. Change the timing to something you can genuinely offer.
The public episode gives you natural speech to listen to. These new examples supply practice with meaning and tone; they do not reproduce private work messages or promise that every person will react in the same way.
Try it before opening the answers
These are original practice activities. Say your answer aloud or write it first, then compare the meaning and explanation. Other clear replies can also work; this is not a proficiency score.
- Which sentence clearly refers to a device: Desliguei o computador or Preciso me desligar do trabalho?
Suggested answer and explanation
Desliguei o computador — I switched off the computer. The computer is the direct object.
- You want to propose a phone-free conversation without issuing an order. What could you say?
Suggested answer and explanation
Podemos deixar os celulares de lado enquanto conversamos? — Can we put our phones aside while we talk? This requests a shared agreement.
- Does Posso olhar amanhã promise delivery tomorrow?
Suggested answer and explanation
No. It offers to look at the task. Delivery needs a separate, explicit agreement.
- A friend missed part of your story and says Me desliguei por um instante. Did they necessarily hang up?
Suggested answer and explanation
No. In this context they are describing a moment of lost attention. The conversation supplies the meaning.
- Complete your own two-sentence reply declining work tonight and proposing a next step.
Suggested answer and explanation
One option: Hoje à noite não consigo. Amanhã posso revisar e confirmar o prazo — I cannot tonight. Tomorrow I can review it and confirm the deadline. Only offer this if the timing is true for you.
