Enquanto Isso in Portuguese: Connect Two Things Happening in the Same Interval

Meet Bruno and the teaching teamEstablish an interval, then introduce the other action
Caldas Aulete’s enquanto entry records enquanto isso for something happening in the intervening interval, alongside the temporal uses of enquanto. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- Você faz o café. Enquanto isso, eu arrumo a mesa. — “You make the coffee. Meanwhile, I’ll set the table.”
- Ela esperava na entrada. Enquanto isso, eu procurava a chave. — “She was waiting at the entrance. Meanwhile, I was looking for the key.”
- O arquivo está carregando. Enquanto isso, podemos escolher as perguntas. — “The file is loading. In the meantime, we can choose the questions.”
The first situation gives isso something to point back to. The second sentence adds a parallel activity within that waiting or working period. It does not require identical start and finish times, and the people can be in different places.
Meanwhile is different from afterward
- Enquanto a água esquenta, separo as xícaras. — “While the water heats up, I get the cups ready.”
- A água está esquentando. Enquanto isso, separo as xícaras. — “The water is heating up. Meanwhile, I get the cups ready.”
- Depois que a água esquenta, preparo o café. — “After the water heats up, I make the coffee.”
The first two present overlapping activities with different sentence structures. Enquanto directly introduces a clause; enquanto isso points back to an interval already established. The final example makes the completed heating a step before preparing the coffee. Replacing depois with enquanto isso changes that timeline, so choose the connector after deciding what actually overlaps.
Original dialogue: divide a waiting period
A: A recepção está verificando a reserva.
Reception is checking the reservation.
B: Enquanto isso, vou avisar que já chegamos.
In the meantime, I’m going to let them know we’ve arrived.
A: Tudo bem. Eu fico aqui com as malas.
All right. I’ll stay here with the bags.
B: Já volto. Vou só mandar a mensagem.
I’ll be right back. I’m just going to send the message.
The reservation check creates the interval for B’s message. This is an original role-play rather than a statement about a hotel’s process. A and B also make clear who stays with the bags. In your own story, name the people when switching between them so the listener can follow both activities.
Por enquanto describes a temporary situation instead
- Por enquanto, vou esperar aqui. — “For now, I’m going to wait here.”
- Enquanto isso, você pode procurar o endereço. — “Meanwhile, you can look for the address.”
- Depois disso, vamos sair juntos. — “After that, we’re going to leave together.”
Por enquanto limits a statement to the present stage. It does not by itself introduce another simultaneous action. Enquanto isso connects a second activity to a known interval. Depois disso moves the story forward after the referenced event. These short connectors answer different questions: what applies for now, what happens meanwhile, and what happens next.
For longer stories, mark one transition at a time. You can first describe the wait, then the parallel phone call, and finally the departure. The listener should not have to guess whether your final action happened during or after the call.
Practice: draw the timeline
- Does enquanto isso necessarily mean after that?
- Combine two actions using enquanto: você cozinha and eu lavo os pratos.
- Say you will stay here for now.
- Someone is checking a booking. Introduce your message during that wait.
- Which connector clearly puts departure after the phone call?
Suggested answers and explanations
- No. It places another action within the same relevant interval.
- Enquanto você cozinha, eu lavo os pratos. — “While you cook, I wash the dishes.” The actions overlap.
- Por enquanto, vou ficar aqui. Por enquanto makes the arrangement temporary; it does not add a parallel action.
- Enquanto isso, vou mandar uma mensagem. The earlier check supplies the interval.
- Depois da ligação, vou sair. — “After the call, I’m going to leave.” This specifies an order rather than overlap.
