Portuguese for a Housewarming in Brazil: Celebrate a New Home — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Congratulate someone on the new home
Casa nova means new home or new house. Use parabéns pela casa nova to congratulate someone, whether they have bought, rented, or moved into the place. You do not need to ask about the person's finances or housing arrangement.
If you want to add a wish, felicidades nessa nova casa is warm and simple.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Parabéns pela casa nova! | Congratulations on the new home! |
| Que bom conhecer o seu novo cantinho. | I’m glad to see your new place. |
| Desejo muitas felicidades nessa casa. | I wish you lots of happiness in this home. |
Ask about a feature the host wants to show
Let the host choose which rooms or details to show. Ask about a feature you genuinely notice instead of commenting on the cost, size, or neighborhood unless the host brings that up.
A short question about what they enjoy can lead to a more personal conversation than listing observations about the property.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é o seu lugar favorito da casa? | What is your favorite place in the home? |
| Você já conseguiu organizar tudo? | Have you managed to unpack everything yet? |
| Essa varanda é muito gostosa. | This balcony is lovely. |
Offer practical help without assuming it is needed
You can offer to carry something, bring a dish next time, or help with a small task. Phrase the offer as a question so the host can accept or decline comfortably.
If you brought a gift, explain what it is and avoid presenting it as something the household must use.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quer ajuda para levar alguma coisa? | Would you like help carrying anything? |
| Da próxima vez, posso trazer uma sobremesa. | Next time, I can bring dessert. |
| Trouxe uma plantinha para vocês, se gostarem. | I brought a little plant for you, if you like it. |
Remember: Use casa nova to celebrate the move, ask about a feature the host enjoys, and make offers easy to accept or decline.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
Congratulations on the new home!

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use casa nova to celebrate the move, ask about a feature the host enjoys, and make offers easy to accept or decline.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
