At a Toll Plaza in Brazil: Ask About Lanes and Payment — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Recognize the words on a toll road

Pedágio means toll, and praça de pedágio is a toll plaza. You may see signs for pagamento automático (automatic payment) or cabines (toll booths). Follow the signs and local instructions rather than assuming every lane accepts the same method.

A tag is often called a tag or adesivo in conversation. If you are using a rental car, ask the rental company whether it has an electronic toll tag and how any charges are handled.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Recognize the words on a toll road
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Esta faixa aceita pagamento em dinheiro?Does this lane accept cash payment?
O carro alugado tem tag de pedágio?Does the rental car have a toll tag?
Onde fica a cabine com pagamento manual?Where is the booth with manual payment?

Ask how to pay and keep the receipt

Some toll roads offer electronic payment, while options at a particular plaza can vary. Ask which methods are accepted before choosing a lane when possible. Recibo means receipt; comprovante means proof of payment.

If you are unsure which lane to use, ask for the manual-payment option or follow the road signs. Do not stop in a lane unless the attendant or signage directs you to do so.

Remember: Look for pedágio, cabine, and pagamento automático. Check the accepted method for your lane and ask the rental company how an electronic tag is billed.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Look for pedágio, cabine, and pagamento automático. Check the accepted method for your lane and ask the rental company how an electronic tag is billed.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
