Portuguese at a Hotel: Check-In, Room Problems and Requests

At a hotel, a useful request has three parts: identify what you need, explain the detail and confirm what happens next. Practice that pattern for check-in, breakfast, a room problem and check-out in Brazilian Portuguese.

Check in with the information the receptionist needs

Start with Boa tarde. Tenho uma reserva no nome de Alex Morgan. — Good afternoon. I have a reservation under Alex Morgan. Use your actual booking name. Keep the confirmation available so you can show the details if the spelling is hard to understand.

These dialogues are original written practice examples, not a recording of a hotel or a statement of universal hotel policies. Ask the property about its own document requirements, check-in times, fees and available services.

    You might hearMeaningA useful reply
Em nome de quem?Under whose name?Em nome de Alex Morgan.
Por quantas noites? For how many nights?Por três noites. — For three nights.
Pode preencher esta ficha?Could you fill out this form?Pode me ajudar com este campo? — Could you help with this field?
O quarto ainda não está pronto. The room is not ready yet.Que horas fica pronto? — What time will it be ready?

Confirm breakfast and the room location

Hóspede: O café da manhã está incluído?
Recepcionista: Sim. É das sete às dez, no primeiro andar.
Hóspede: Das sete às dez da manhã, certo?
Recepcionista: Isso. Seu quarto fica no terceiro andar.
    Hóspede: Onde fica o elevador?

Meaning: The guest asks if breakfast is included. In this example it runs from seven to ten on the first floor. The guest confirms the time and asks where the elevator is after hearing that the room is on the third floor.

Listen for das… às…, the beginning and end of a time range. If you miss a number, ask Até que horas? — Until what time? For locations, térreo means ground floor. Floor labels can differ from what you use at home; confirm the sign or location rather than mentally converting an uncertain number.

    Explain a room problem clearly

“There is a problem” is a start, but the staff member needs to know where and what. A helpful pattern is Estou no quarto [number]. O/A [item] não está funcionando. — I’m in room [number]. The [item] is not working.

Hóspede: Boa noite. Estou no quarto 204. O chuveiro não está esquentando.
Recepcionista: Vou pedir para alguém verificar.
Hóspede: Certo. Alguém pode vir agora ou preciso esperar?
Recepcionista: Pode esperar no quarto? Vou confirmar o horário.
Hóspede: Tudo bem. Pode me avisar quando souber?

Meaning: The guest reports that the shower is not heating, asks whether someone can come now, and requests an update. Vou confirmar means the staff member will check; it does not mean a time has already been agreed.

    • O ar-condicionado não está funcionando. — The air conditioner is not working.
    • A chave não abre a porta. — The key does not open the door.
    • Preciso de mais uma toalha, por favor. — I need one more towel, please.
    • Seria possível trocar de quarto? — Would it be possible to change rooms?

A question is not a guarantee that a service or another room is available. If timing matters, confirm it explicitly.

Ask about check-out without assuming the answer

Ask Até que horas preciso fazer o check-out? To request later departure: É possível sair mais tarde? Tem algum custo? — Is it possible to leave later? Is there a charge? If you need bag storage, ask Posso deixar a mala aqui até as três? Confirm the property’s answer and collection arrangements.

    Practice the detail that changes

    1. Breakfast is das seis e meia às nove e meia. Identify the start and end.
    2. You are in room 305 and your key does not open the door. Report both details.
    3. You hear Vou verificar se é possível. Has your late check-out been confirmed?
    Show possible answers
    1. 6:30 to 9:30. Confirm Da manhã? if necessary.
    2. Estou no quarto 305. A chave não abre a porta.
    3. No. It means “I will check whether it is possible.” Ask for the outcome before relying on it.

Rehearse with the room number and problem changed each time. Pair this lesson with Uber pickup conversations and the 14-day trip practice plan.
