Portuguese at a Brazilian Gym: Memberships, Classes, and Equipment — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask to see the gym and learn its schedule
In Brazil, academia commonly means a gym or fitness center. Ask whether you can visit the space and find out its operating hours before choosing a plan. If you want to use a specific area, name it: musculação (weight training), piscina (pool), or sala de aula (classroom or studio), depending on the facility.
Gym schedules and services vary by location. Ask the staff to confirm the current hours, access rules, and what is included in the plan rather than relying on a general phrase or an old schedule.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso conhecer a academia antes de me matricular? | Can I see the gym before signing up? |
| A que horas vocês abrem durante a semana? | What time do you open on weekdays? |
| O plano dá acesso à piscina? | Does the plan include access to the pool? |
Compare plans and ask about group classes
Use mensalidade for a monthly fee and plano for a membership plan. Ask what the monthly amount includes, whether classes require separate booking, and how cancellation works. Make sure you understand the term and any conditions before signing an agreement.
A group class is aula em grupo. If you want to know whether a class is appropriate for your experience, ask the instructor what to expect and what equipment to bring. You do not need to describe your health history in detail at the front desk.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é o valor da mensalidade? | What is the monthly fee? |
| As aulas em grupo estão incluídas no plano? | Are group classes included in the plan? |
| Preciso reservar a aula com antecedência? | Do I need to book the class in advance? |
Find equipment and ask for a quick explanation
Use equipamento for equipment and aparelho for an exercise machine. If you do not know the name, point to the machine and ask how it works or whether someone can explain the setup. This is a language phrase, not a substitute for instruction on safe use.
In a busy room, a short request is easier to understand: você pode me mostrar? (could you show me?) or esse aparelho está ocupado? (is this machine in use?). Listen for ocupado or livre to find out whether equipment is available.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode me explicar como ajusta este aparelho? | Could you explain how to adjust this machine? |
| Este equipamento está ocupado? | Is this equipment in use? |
| Onde ficam os colchonetes? | Where are the exercise mats? |
Remember: Practice three gym questions before your visit: one about hours, one about what a plan includes, and one about joining a class or using equipment.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice three gym questions before your visit: one about hours, one about what a plan includes, and one about joining a class or using equipment.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
