How to Ask About Recipe Substitutions in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask whether an ingredient can be replaced
Substituir means to replace or substitute. You can ask Posso substituir o leite por água? (Can I replace the milk with water?). The pattern is substituir X por Y: replace X with Y.
Trocar can also mean to swap or exchange in everyday speech. Posso trocar a manteiga por óleo? is a straightforward way to ask whether you can swap butter for oil.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Dá para substituir o açúcar por mel? | Can I replace the sugar with honey? |
| Posso trocar a farinha de trigo por outra farinha? | Can I swap wheat flour for another flour? |
Ask what the ingredient changes
A substitute may change the taste or texture. Use sabor for flavor and consistência for consistency or texture. Ask O que muda se eu usar…? (What changes if I use…?) to invite an explanation.
If you have an allergy or a medical dietary restriction, name it clearly and confirm how the food is prepared. A language question cannot establish whether a particular ingredient or kitchen practice is safe for you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A consistência fica diferente? | Will the texture be different? |
| A receita funciona sem ovo? | Does the recipe work without egg? |
Confirm the amount and preparation
Once someone suggests an alternative, check how much to use and whether you need to change the cooking time. A simple Quanto eu coloco? means ‘How much should I add?’ You can also repeat the ingredient back to confirm.
Try the question with ingredients that appear in the recipe you are making. Keeping the original ingredient and the substitute in the same sentence makes the comparison clear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Então, uso a mesma quantidade de óleo? | So, do I use the same amount of oil? |
| Preciso deixar no forno por mais tempo? | Do I need to leave it in the oven longer? |
Remember: Ask what can replace an ingredient, what changes, and whether the amount or cooking time should change too.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask what can replace an ingredient, what changes, and whether the amount or cooking time should change too.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
