Resolve a Roommate Misunderstanding in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Describe the event before assigning blame
When something goes wrong at home, say what happened and what you understood. This gives your roommate a chance to explain before the conversation turns into an accusation. Use eu achei que… (I thought that…) to describe your understanding.
Stay specific about the task, place, and date. Avoid using sempre (always) or nunca (never) for a one-time mistake.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eu achei que você ia tirar o lixo ontem. | I thought you were going to take out the trash yesterday. |
| Acho que entendemos o combinado de formas diferentes. | I think we understood the agreement differently. |
Ask for their perspective
A question such as como você entendeu? (how did you understand it?) invites the other person to explain. Listen for whether you disagreed about the task, the date, or who was responsible.
If your wording was unclear, you can correct it: eu quis dizer… means I meant… A brief clarification can solve a language misunderstanding without deciding who was at fault.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como você entendeu o que a gente combinou? | How did you understand what we agreed? |
| Eu quis dizer que faria isso hoje, não ontem. | I meant that I would do it today, not yesterday. |
Agree on one next step
After you understand the difference, decide what happens next. Make the new agreement specific: who will do the task and when. If the same confusion repeats, put the plan in the shared chat so the whole household can refer to it.
For a serious or recurring conflict, a short phrase cannot replace the relevant housing agreement or appropriate support.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Então eu tiro o lixo hoje e você cuida da reciclagem amanhã. | So I will take out the trash today and you will handle recycling tomorrow. |
| Vamos deixar a escala escrita na geladeira? | Shall we put the schedule in writing on the refrigerator? |
Remember: Describe what happened, ask how the other person understood it, and agree on a clear next step.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
I thought you were going to take out the trash yesterday.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Describe what happened, ask how the other person understood it, and agree on a clear next step.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
