Visit New Parents in Brazil: Portuguese for Meeting a New Baby — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask when a visit works for the family
New parents may be tired or managing many visitors, so ask whether they want a visit and what timing works. Keep the invitation easy to decline, without asking for private details.
A message in advance also lets the family tell you about any boundaries they want visitors to follow.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Gostaria de visitar vocês. Qual dia seria bom? | I’d like to visit you. What day would work? |
| Se vocês preferirem descansar, podemos marcar para outra semana. | If you would rather rest, we can plan for another week. |
| Tem algum horário que seja melhor para vocês? | Is there a time that works better for you? |
Congratulate the parents and welcome the baby
Parabéns pelo bebê is a simple congratulations. You can say what a joy it is to meet the baby without assuming how the parents feel or what they want to share.
If you are unsure about the baby's name or pronouns, listen to how the family introduces the child and follow their wording.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Parabéns pelo bebê! Que bom conhecer vocês. | Congratulations on the baby! I’m glad to meet you all. |
| Como vocês estão? | How are you both doing? |
| Que nome bonito! | What a beautiful name! |
Offer specific help and respect the answer
A specific offer is easier to respond to than “let me know if you need anything.” You might offer to bring food, pick up an item, or help with a household task. The parents may say no, and that is a complete answer.
Keep the visit at the length the family prefers and follow any health or household instructions they share.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso trazer o almoço na terça-feira? | Can I bring lunch on Tuesday? |
| Querem que eu passe no mercado? | Would you like me to stop by the market? |
| Se precisarem de alguma coisa, estou por perto. | If you need anything, I’m nearby. |
Remember: Ask before visiting, congratulate the family, and offer specific help without assuming it will be wanted.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask before visiting, congratulate the family, and offer specific help without assuming it will be wanted.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
