At a Brazilian Baby Shower: Portuguese for Chá de Bebê — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Understand the invitation and reply
Chá de bebê is the common Portuguese name for a baby shower. Some families also use chá de fraldas when the event focuses on diapers. Check the invitation for the date, location, and whether the host has requested an RSVP.
Traditions and gift preferences vary. Do not assume that every family will have a registry or follow the same format.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Obrigada pelo convite! Vou adorar ir. | Thank you for the invitation! I’d love to come. |
| Que horas começa o chá de bebê? | What time does the baby shower start? |
| Preciso confirmar até que dia? | By what day do I need to confirm? |
Ask about a gift without making assumptions
If the invitation does not say what to bring, ask the host whether there is a list or a preference. Fralda means diaper, and lista de presentes means gift list. Some families prefer a practical gift, while others may prefer something different.
A polite question gives the parents or host room to express what would be useful.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês fizeram uma lista de presentes? | Did you make a gift list? |
| Tem algum tamanho de fralda que vocês preferem? | Is there a diaper size you prefer? |
| Posso levar alguma coisa para a festa? | Can I bring anything for the party? |
Congratulate the parents-to-be warmly
Use parabéns para congratulate the family and ask how they are feeling. Avoid unsolicited advice or personal questions about pregnancy; follow the parents' lead and keep the focus on what they want to share.
If you are not sure how to address both parents, vocês is a neutral plural form for you all.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Parabéns! Estou muito feliz por vocês. | Congratulations! I’m very happy for you both. |
| Como vocês estão se sentindo? | How are you both feeling? |
| O bebê já tem nome? | Does the baby already have a name? |
Remember: RSVP clearly, ask the host about gifts if needed, and let the parents choose what they want to discuss.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
Thank you for the invitation! I’d love to come.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
RSVP clearly, ask the host about gifts if needed, and let the parents choose what they want to discuss.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
