Pick something you want to do in Portuguese this week: order lunch, talk about yesterday, or send your partner’s family a message. A specific situation makes it easier to notice what you need. “Get fluent” does not tell you whether tomorrow’s session should involve listening to a question or recalling a verb.
This guide is our practice framework, not a study of Duolingo learners. A streak, XP total or completed course is not a proficiency assessment. We do not assign a CEFR level to your account or promise conversation after a fixed number of weeks.
Find the missing step
| What happens? | Try this next | A small check |
|---|---|---|
| You understand only while reading. | Listen to a short passage before looking at the text. | Can you identify who did what? |
| You recognize a sentence but cannot produce it. | Cover it, recall the meaning, then say your version. | Can you change one detail? |
| You answer once and the conversation stops. | Add one relevant question. | Can you react to the reply? |
| You lose the thread after an unfamiliar word. | Practice asking a precise clarification question. | Can you find out which word or idea you missed? |
A short conversation you can adapt
The following is an original written practice example. It is not copied from an app, a transcript or a recording.
A: O que você fez ontem?
B: Fiquei em casa e cozinhei. E você?
A: Fui a um aniversário.
B: Que legal! De quem?
A: Da minha irmã.
Meaning: What did you do yesterday? — I stayed home and cooked. And you? — I went to a birthday celebration. — Nice! Whose? — My sister’s.
Notice how E você? returns the question, and De quem? follows the specific answer. You do not need a long sentence for every turn. You do need to listen for the detail that makes the next question relevant.
Practice recall, then change the conversation
- Cover B’s first answer. Say what you actually did yesterday. One true sentence is enough.
- Change the birthday to a film: Assisti a um filme. What follow-up would you ask?
- Imagine you did not catch the person’s activity. Ask them to repeat that part.
Show possible replies
For the film: Qual filme? — Which film? You could then ask Você gostou? — Did you like it?
For clarification: Não entendi o que você fez. Pode repetir? — I did not understand what you did. Could you repeat it?
Build a week around one useful topic
- First session: find a short model exchange and understand the situation. Save a few useful phrases with their meaning.
- Next session: hear a short passage before reading. Replay the unclear part, then retell the main idea. Our podcast practice guide explains the sequence.
- Next session: cover your notes and answer two or three questions aloud. Check the parts you could not recall.
- Conversation session: use the topic with a willing partner, teacher or practice group. Agree on whether you want corrections during or after the exchange.
- Later review: repeat with new details. Keep an example of what still needs help.
Choose a session length that fits your life. The sequence gives you tasks to revisit; it is not a promise that one week produces a particular level.
Check the tools you already have
Do not assume Duolingo has no speaking or conversation tools. Its official Max page, checked on October 21, 2026, lists Video Call and Roleplay for English speakers learning Portuguese. Check your course, device and account offer for availability. Our Duolingo review separates documented features from outcomes we have not measured.
If you want Brazilian expressions and native audio, consider Real Life Portuguese. Bruno Lopes, the author shown on this site, is its co-founder. If your missing activity is a real exchange, explore the community or check lesson plans before booking a trial. Add a resource for a concrete reason, then use it.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop using Duolingo to practice conversation?
Not necessarily. You can keep the activities you find useful and add practice that matches a missing skill, such as understanding unfamiliar replies or recalling your own answer.
What level am I after finishing Duolingo Portuguese?
Course completion alone does not establish a CEFR level. Evaluate tasks across listening, speaking, reading and writing, or seek an appropriate assessment.
What should I practice if I recognize Portuguese but freeze when speaking?
Cover a familiar exchange, recall your own answer, change a detail and ask one follow-up. Notice exactly where you need help rather than treating all speaking as one problem.
