CELPE-Bras Preparation: 5 Common Study Mistakes to Avoid — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Mistake one: memorizing answers word for word
Prepared phrases can be useful, but a long memorized answer may not match the prompt or the conversation. Practise reusable structures and learn how to adapt your message to a new topic.
For speaking, keep a few transition phrases ready and generate the examples from the question you actually hear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Na minha experiência, isso depende do contexto. | In my experience, that depends on the context. |
| Um exemplo disso aconteceu no meu bairro. | One example of that happened in my neighborhood. |
Mistakes two and three: translate every word and ignore the audience
Word-for-word translation slows comprehension and can produce unnatural sentences. Focus on the idea and express it with Portuguese you can control.
A response also needs to fit its reader. A casual invitation and a formal request should not sound identical. Check the task before choosing greetings and verb forms.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou com dúvida sobre o prazo. | I have a question about the deadline. |
| Oi, pessoal! Vamos nos encontrar depois da aula? | Hi, everyone! Shall we meet after class? |
Mistakes four and five: study grammar alone and skip review
Grammar matters, but isolated exercises do not replace listening, reading, speaking, and writing with a purpose. Practise grammar inside messages and conversations so you can choose forms while communicating.
Finishing practice without reviewing it wastes useful feedback. Identify one pattern to improve and make that the target of your next session.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vou praticar o passado contando o que fiz no fim de semana. | I will practise the past tense by describing what I did on the weekend. |
| Na próxima tentativa, vou separar melhor as ideias com conectores. | In the next attempt, I will separate the ideas better with connectors. |
Remember: Train Portuguese as communication: understand the situation, respond to the task, and use review to choose your next practice goal.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
In my experience, that depends on the context.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Train Portuguese as communication: understand the situation, respond to the task, and use review to choose your next practice goal.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
