Use dar uma volta for a short outing

Dar uma volta is a flexible expression for taking a walk, going for a short drive or ride, or making a round through a place. It often describes a casual outing rather than travel to a distant destination.

The surrounding words clarify what kind of outing you mean. Add de carro for a drive, a pé for walking, or a place such as no parque when the route matters.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use dar uma volta for a short outing
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Vamos dar uma volta no parque?Shall we take a walk in the park?
Meu pai foi dar uma volta de carro. My father went for a drive.
Dei uma volta pelo centro antes da reunião.I walked around downtown before the meeting.

Use the expression with dar in the right tense

Dar is an irregular verb, so its common forms include dou uma volta (I take a walk), deu uma volta (he or she took one), and demos uma volta (we took one). The noun volta stays singular in this expression.

A volta can also mean a lap, a turn, or a return depending on context. Dar uma volta around a block might be a short walk; dar a volta por cima means to overcome a setback and is a separate expression.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Use dar uma volta for a short outing or round; add a pé, de carro, or a destination when you want to make the activity clear.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
